The expertise: Built from the retail floor to the machine

 

 

Denim isn’t just a fabric; it’s a living textile with structural geometry, tension points, and historical character. My name is Penny, and I am the founder of Toronto Denim Repair. My journey in this industry began at the age of 17 on the retail floor, giving me a foundational understanding of consumer needs, fit frustrations, and wardrobe styling from day one.

 

Over the past decade, I deliberately expanded my skills across every corner of the fashion world. I moved from the retail floor into luxury leadership, managing a high-end denim boutique, where I mastered the art of premium customer care, client styling, and upscale sourcing. To understand the literal architecture of clothing, I worked as a fashion intern at an alterations studio, learning how garments are patterned, disassembled, and tailored. Today, I use that lifetime of knowledge to operate my own studio and act as a mentor to the next generation of apparel professionals.

 

My true technical mastery developed on the repair bench. Managing a high-volume studio queue with hundreds of active garments has given me an unparalleled, microscopic understanding of why denim fails. By spending a decade structurally rebuilding blown-out crotches, thinning pockets, and decaying vintage seams, I have mastered a rare skill: the ability to look at a garment flat on a rack and predict exactly how it will interact with human anatomy over time. I combine the polished curation of a luxury boutique manager with the analytical eye of a master denim restorer, allowing me to bypass arbitrary size tags and ensure a garment is built to last before you ever buy it.

 

 

The passion: Body-affirming structural fit

 

My technical passion is deeply intertwined with my lived experience as a transgender man. I know firsthand that clothes are a profound form of self-expression, gender affirmation, and safety. Because of my transition, I possess a rare and valuable perspective: I have true, lived experience navigating clothing with both a woman’s body and now a man’s body.

 

I know exactly how traditional womenswear is cut, where it pulls, and how it is patterned to sit on hips and curves. I also intimately understand the completely different spatial geometry, rise expectations, and fabric drape required for a masculine silhouette. Navigating premium retail spaces, shifting body geometry, and changing silhouettes can be deeply isolating and stressful—especially in an industry built on rigid, binary standards that rarely accommodate diverse waist-to-hip ratios or comfort requirements.

 

My mission is to dismantle that friction. I am deeply passionate about taking the high-end, VIP service standards I honed in the boutique world and using them to create a safe, highly inclusive, and celebratory environment for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and folks of all body types.

 

By combining my personal journey through two distinct  fit realities with my industrial denim knowledge, I help my clients reclaim their relationship with clothing.   • Structural Sourcing Tips: Learn how to read a garment flat on a thrift rack. Master the Rigid Stretch Rule (predicting how 100% cotton vs. comfort stretch behaves over time) and the Rear Pocket Placement Hack to instantly spot flattering silhouettes.

  • Personalized Styling Guide: Learn the Proportion Rule to effortlessly balance wide-leg, straight-leg, or relaxed cuts with tops already in your closet. We will align your target inseams with your favorite footwear so you know exactly where your hems should hit.

By looking at your wardrobe through a structural lens, we will salvage forgotten pairs, discard ill-fitting items, and map out exactly what is missing.

 

What is Included

  • Deep-Dive Closet Audit: We methodically test the rise geometry, seam tension, and fabric integrity of every piece of denim you own, sorting them into three piles: Keep, Donate, and Needs Structural Repair.

  • Wardrobe Integration & Styling: We pull shirts, jackets, boots, and sneakers from your existing closet to physically build and photograph 5 to 10 complete outfits, showing you exactly how to style different denim silhouettes for any occasion.

  • Preventative Maintenance Check: I inspect the high-friction zones of your favourite jeans to spot early-stage thinning or pocket tears before they turn into major blowouts.

  • The "Repair Credit" Perk: To kickstart your wardrobe restoration, this package includes a $50 CAD credit applied directly toward any repair or preservation work required on the damaged jeans we pull from your closet during the session.

Then, I step away from my workbench to independently scout local hubs, text retail managers, pre-vet incoming vendor drops, and have 3–5 foundational pairs of denim put on hold in your exact measurements before we even meet.

  • 2.5-Hour Accompanied Trip: We walk a curated, highly efficient storefront route together. I act as your structural gatekeeper in the fitting room—analyzing fabric tension on the fly, checking rise geometry, and ensuring you don't buy pieces destined for premature blowouts.

  • Boutique vs. Vintage Tracks: Choose the Boutique Route ($800) for high-end raw and modern premium denim storefronts, or the Vintage Hunt ($950) where I use my industry eye to spot-check rare pieces for hidden fabric decay or compromised vintage stitching.

  • Your Deliverables: You walk away with perfectly fitted denim, a post-trip digital styling lookbook summary emailed to you, and specialized care/washing instructions tailored strictly to the fabric weights and textiles purchased.
